Let's just say things got interesting. 😎 Here's an exclusive sneak peek! MATT RUBY | SUBSTANCE A comedy experiment: 4 nights. 4 shows. 4 substances... 🚫 Sober 🌿 Weed 🥃 Booze 🍄 Shrooms ▶️ WATCH THE FULL SPECIAL: https://youtu.be/2Ak5CQSVVvI ABOUT What happens when a control freak decides to lose control? That’s the question at the heart of Substance, comedian Matt Ruby’s new comedy special/documentary/experiment. In Substance, Ruby performs four standup sets, each one filmed a week apart, in a different state of mind: high, drunk, tripping on shrooms, and sober. Ruby takes the mission seriously – and winds up getting seriously f*%$ up. The film, directed by Matthew Salacuse, also includes documentary footage of the day preceding each performance, including conversations between Ruby and fellow comedians like Shane Torres, Andy Haynes, and Mark Normand about comedy, sobriety, performing under the influence, and more. “There’s a civil war in my head. I want everything to be perfect, but I also love it when things run wild,” explains Ruby. “So I decided to create this experiment, using substances I enjoy offstage but don’t typically use while performing to disrupt my status quo.” Each show was filmed at the New York Comedy Club in NYC’s East Village in front of unsuspecting audiences. “These weren’t ‘special’ tapings where the audience is all pumped up, they were just regular spots on showcase shows,” explains Ruby. “The crowd didn’t know anything about what I was doing until I went onstage. The whole goal was to do a real show and see if I'd crash and burn or still be able to stick the landing. Honestly, even I was surprised by how it all turned out.” In his sets, Ruby discusses each of the substances ingested alongside jokes about his therapist, magicians, politicians, serial killers, the battle of the generations, and much more. There are also deeper musings from Ruby about social media addiction, ego, death, and his mom’s (and the venue's) surprising relationship with the Velvet Underground. The result is a compelling, hilarious, and surprisingly philosophical adventure. “For a seemingly shallow idea, it winds up getting pretty deep. And it shows how these substances can really impact you in wildly different ways,” Ruby says. “Also, it showed me how much audiences want humanity more than perfection. Although I cringe at some of the sloppier moments, I can still see how they're captivating in their own way. Even when things didn’t go according to plan, it still wound up feeling right for the project. Sometimes not knowing the way is the way.” Substance is edited by Anthony Verderame (The Problem With Jon Stewart, Roy Wood Jr.: No One Loves You). Sets were filmed at the Good Eggs show at New York Comedy Club in NYC’s East Village. The soundtrack features music from Plastics Hi-Fi, the indie rock band Ruby fronted in Chicago in the early 2000s before he began performing comedy.
